Defense Lawyer desk: Criminal History of Dallas Mavericks Basketball Players

Dallas mavericks criminal history

The Dallas Mavericks are a professional NBA basketball team based in Dallas, Texas. The team has a long and storied history, having been in existence since 1980 and winning the NBA Championship in 2011. Unfortunately, like many NBA basketball teams, the Mavericks have also had its fair share of players who have been charged with or convicted of criminal charges in Dallas over the years.

As a Dallas defense lawyer, Gallian Firm is always informed when a celebrity or athlete is arrested.  Many of our clients ask about these cases, so sometimes we use our blog space to offer more information regarding these cases.  Here is a historical look at Dallas Maverick player criminal arrests over recent years.

First Dallas Player Charged

The first player to be charged with a crime for the Dallas Mavericks that garnered public attention was guard Brad Davis in 1987. Davis was charged with aggravated assault after getting into an altercation with a security guard at a Dallas nightclub. He pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to probation, community service, and a fine.

Several Incidents of DWI and Needing a Drug Possession Lawyer

The Mavericks have had a number of run-ins with law enforcement wherein a DWI lawyer or drug possession defense lawyer became necessary .

In 1993, center Roy Tarpley was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with marijuana possession and resisting arrest. He pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to a year of probation and community service.

In 1996, center Shawn Bradley was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

In 1997, guard Derek Harper was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

In 1998, guard Derek Harper was arrested again, this time for driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana possession. He pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to six months of probation and community service.

In 2004, guard Jason Terry was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

In 2006, guard Devin Harris was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

In 2009, forward Josh Howard was arrested for marijuana possession. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to a year of probation and community service.

In 2010, guard Delonte West was arrested for marijuana possession. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

In 2014, guard Gal Mekel was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He pled no contest to the charge and was sentenced to one year of probation and community service.

Prosecutors will not offer the defendant a plea bargain if they have no reason to do so. When you have a DWI lawyer representing you, there is a decreased likelihood that the prosecution can secure a conviction. Therefore, they are more likely to strike a plea deal, potentially resulting in the lessening of charges. A plea bargain may help you avoid jail time and could even help you keep your driver’s license.

An attorney who specializes in DWI defense cases has the ability, knowledge, and reputation that can benefit you tremendously in the courtroom.

While the majority of these charges have been for driving under the influence of alcohol, some players have also been charged with other crimes such as aggravated assault, marijuana possession, and resisting arrest. While it is important for the team and its players to stay out of trouble, these unfortunate incidents are a reminder that even professional athletes are not immune to making mistakes.
